The True Definition of Technology

By Amanda Tocci

If I were to ask, what the definition of technology is, I'm sure words such as computers, advancement, development etc, would emerge. However would your response incorporate the words life, society and environment? Isn't that the true definition of technology?

That is the branch of knowledge that deals with the creation and use of technical means and their interaction with life, society and the environment.
For technology to bear its true definition it must exist to contribute to the way we function in our day to day existence, it must allow us to bring, to change and to impart a branch of knowledge that pushes us to redefine and re-examine how we currently interact with our environment.

For technology to do any less is merely robbing us from experiencing the true benefits of technologies potential.

As parents, always be mindful of the promises those who distribute technology make. Technology is not the problem, it can be the unfulfilled promises distributors make in order to sell their product.

Just because an application presents itself as being technologically based does not mean it allows your child true interaction with their environment or gives them knowledge to be used within the classroom.

The louder, the more colourful, the faster or the more expensive does not mean greater acquisition of knowledge. What it can mean is the opposite of your intention.

Do not be conned by technology that promises everything in the world. Be aware of what and how that technology will allow your child to improve within the classroom and always, always ask questions.
